Letoya Luckett - Used To

Written By: Kesha O.

On May 12th former Destiny's Child member, Letoya Luckett has released her third solo album titled Back 2 Life. It has been 8 years since the singer and actress released a project, that being her previous album Lady Love. This song is showing us that she is back, can stand alone, and is a force to be reckoned with. The album has one feature, which is from Ludacris, proving that she is here to show us what she can do. Back 2 Life is relatable to all people going through the motions of a relationship - love, sex, heartbreak, and healing.

The song that I feel is Hot Music worthy is the previously released single “Used To”. This song brings that sexy turn up or slow wind that we have not previously seen from Luckett (at least not that I remember). In my opinion, it seems like she has stepped outside of her comfort zone with both this song as well as the album, while still staying true to who she is. I think it all seems to have paid off, and the reason why this song has gotten multiple plays from me. Thumbs up, girl!

Logic - Black SpiderMan ft. Damian Lamar Hudson

There's been a lot of great music released lately. Kendrick Lamar released his highly anticipated album DAMN and has been dominating the charts. Even Joey Bada$$ dropped fire with his album ALL-AMERICAN BADA$$. While it would be easy to do a piece on these guys, and it may be coming to a device near you soon, I wanted this Hot Music piece to focus Logic and his song Black SpiderMan.

Logic is rapper from Gaithersburg, Maryland. Although he appears to be Caucasian at a first glance, he is bi-racial. Not that it matters because people are people and music is music, which Logic pointed out on when he dropped Black SpiderMan on April 13th. With lyrics like "Not perceived by the things I believe or the color of my skin/ Or the fact I’m attracted to her, maybe him" - he encourages people to embrace who they are and the things that make them unique. Another solid line for me is "Do what you love and don’t ever wonder what it could be" – which is instant inspiration for anyone listening.

So listen and enjoy this strong, but still light-hearted (and a little goofy) message that deserves it’s place in the Hot Music category!

Ayo & Teo - Rolex

Wriiten by: Kesha O.

I heard today's Hot Music when I was in a fitness class recently. The class killed me, but this song kept me lit through the whole thing. "Rolex" from YouTube sensations Ayo & Teo is guaranteed to get you moving!

Ayo & Teo are best known for their dancing videos. They have dozens of videos that are already getting millions of views, but it was their video of Rae Sremmurd's "Swang" that sent the duo viral.

"Rolex" was released in mid-January, and I feel like I've been living under a rock since I'm just now hearing it. It’s a high-energy song with the signature, catchy phrase that will even make your grandma dab. With the energy and eyes these two bring dancing, it will be interesting to see how that translates to making it in the industry. I'm curious to see what these two will do next, but in the meantime… Where’s my granny?! *Dab* Dab*

CISE - Gates Open

Written By: Kesha O.

Sorry it has been awhile, but I'm happy to be back and bringing you some hot music coming from the west coast!

Our hot song of the week comes from CISE, an emerging new artist hailing from Los Angeles, CA. He recently released his debut album “Good Enough” on February 21, 2017. This album has been in the works for some years now and honestly I’m glad it wasn’t rushed because it sounds immaculate!

The song that specifically stood out to me was "Gates Open.” The vibe makes me think of a happy ending in any movie from the early 2000's that Sanaa Lathan starred in, where she just got her man back. (Ha!) But on a more serious note, CISE does a great job of articulating his appreciation for that special someone that kept him going. His inspiration coupled with the smooth production of Classy Touch and hints of sexy saxophone riffs sprinkled throughout (from our very own Tressie, #shamelessplug), makes this song a well worth listen. Check it out!

Wale Feat. Lil Wayne - Running Back

Written By: Kesha O.

Wale is back at it again to grace us with another single. Off to great start this year, in January he has already opened for President Obama for the State of the Union Address. Then he gave us a preview of this single, "Running Back", when he performed it with Lil Wayne on ESPN. All of this in preparation for his forthcoming album SHINE. After first being mentioned early last year, there is still no word yet as to when we can expect it.

However, Wale is still keeping us drawn in with Running Back while we wait. He brings us a flow that we commonly see in most songs from younger generation rappers, aka the "Migos flow", while still giving us that Wale flair. The addition of Lil Wayne to the track with lyrics gave this single that extra sauce! Check it out!

Kevin Ross Ft. Chaz French - Be Great

Written By: Kesha O.

What better way to start the new year than with the simple question, "Do you want to be great?"

The DC/Maryland native, Kevin Ross, provokes us to tap into our subconscious and think about how we can work hard and grind for a better future.

Kevin Ross graduated from the prestigious Berkelee College of Music. Soon after he would begin working with R&B greats like Usher and Jamie Foxx. Now signed with Motown Records, his goal is to be as creative and innovative with music now as they were then.

Be Great featuring Chaz French was released in early 2016. However, with Ross' EP "Long Song Away" being released in December, it deserved to be brought to Hot Music from me to you. The mostly piano-driven instrumental provides the perfect accompaniment to both Ross and French. The smooth vocals and combined with the crisp flow provides the perfect song to vibe out to, check it out!

Big Sean Feat. Chance the Rapper and Jeremih - Living Single

Written By: T.C.

Big Sean is making sure people understand that he's here to stay.  He wants you to know he appreciates you and he's going to continue to supply you with the bars, concepts, and jams! After dropping "Bounce Back" and it making the Top 40 on Billboard, he rewards us with "Living Single" featuring Chance the Rapper and Jeremih. It originally leaked in July, and both Sean and Chance were distraught about it. I definitely understand their frustration, because the leak doesn’t compare to the completed version. Just goes to show how it pays to have patience.

The producer Cam O'bi provided a soulful, mellow, boom bap beat for Sean and Chance to lace gems of how there "aint a single living thing that likes living single." From Papoose and Remy Ma promoting black love,  to Gucci Mane proposing to his girlfriend Keyshia Ka'oir, the song is timely in the fact that culture is drifting further away from the player/thot lifestyle. Jeremih's voice fits perfectly atop the beat, with a great coasting cadence, however my only critique is that the lyrics of the chorus leave something to be desired. Check it out though!

Bruno Mars - Chunky

Written By: Kesha O.

Now I knew the Bruno Mars album had just came out, but I finally took a listen once a friend mentioned it and I'm glad I did! The whole album makes me feel like I'm in a 90’s romantic comedy and I need to be out kicking it with my girls and/or boo. I guess my only critique of the album is that I'm disappointed this didn't come out during the summertime. However, I've thrown a couple of the songs on my winter workout playlist to get ready for Summer '17.

All of the songs on this album will definitely just put you all in your feelings… But one of my absolute favorites is "Chunky". It's a song for any occasion! Whether you’re singing at the top of your lungs while stuck in traffic, doing a two-step in your kitchen while washing the dishes, or pre-gaming before a night out on the town, this song will definitely put you in a great mood! It’s a song where you just have to groove to it. It provides a great balance of the old school flavor, like the electric keyboard and the female vocals that are sprinkled across the track, with a new school feel. All in all, I love the track and think it stands in a league of its own.
